Introduction: The BMW G22 4 Series — One Body Style Became Three

When BMW launched the second-generation 4 Series in 2020, it made a bold design statement: the dramatically enlarged kidney grille, described by BMW designers as an expression of presence and road dominance, polarised opinion immediately. But however you feel about the styling, there’s no debating that the G22 4 Series family is a genuinely compelling package — particularly once its iDrive 7 hidden features are unlocked.

Unlike the first-generation F32/F33/F36 4 Series (2013–2020), which shared its infotainment platform with the F30 3 Series, the G22 family was redesigned from the ground up on BMW’s CLAR platform with the full iDrive 7 MGU system. That means all nine hidden features that are unlockable on the G30 5 Series and G20 3 Series are equally available on the G22, G23, and G24 — and the remote ENET session procedure is identical.

G22 Family Overview: Three Body Styles, One Platform

The BMW G22 4 Series spans three distinct body styles, each sharing the same iDrive 7 MGU electrical architecture:

G22 — 4 Series Coupe

The two-door coupe launched in 2020. Available as 420i, 430i, M440i, and the full M4 Competition (G82). The coupe body emphasises the large kidney grille most prominently and is the most common variant globally. Model years 2020–present are all supported for ENET coding.

G23 — 4 Series Convertible

BMW replaced the F33’s retractable hardtop with a traditional fabric soft-top in the G23 — a decision praised by purists for reducing weight and improving open-air feel. Available as 420i Convertible, 430i Convertible, and M440i xDrive Convertible. The G23 shares the identical OBD2/ENET coding architecture as the G22 — all 9 features apply.

G24 — 4 Series Gran Coupe

The G24 Gran Coupe is arguably the most practical member of the 4 Series family and has become one of the most popular models in the lineup for coding. By combining a four-door body with a flowing coupe roofline and a frameless rear hatch, the G24 delivers everyday usability without the visual compromise of a traditional sedan. Available as 420i Gran Coupe, 430i Gran Coupe, and M440i xDrive Gran Coupe. Produced from 2021 onwards, all G24 units carry iDrive 7 MGU and are fully compatible with all 9 coding features.

Why is the G24 so popular for coding? G24 owners tend to use their cars as daily drivers — meaning features like start-stop memory, automatic mirror fold, and the disclaimer screen removal have the highest daily impact. The G24 also frequently comes from the factory in mid-spec trim, making feature unlocking particularly rewarding for owners who want the premium experience without the premium option pack pricing.

iDrive 7 MGU on the G22 Family

All G22, G23, and G24 models from 2020 onwards use the iDrive 7 MGU platform — the same system found in the G20 3 Series, G30 5 Series, G01 X3, and G05 X5. This platform consistency is one of the most significant advantages for owners:

• 8.8″ or 10.25″ touchscreen with full Live Cockpit display integration
• OTA (over-the-air) update capable — BMW occasionally pushes software updates that can affect coding parameters; we check this before each session
• ENET coding access via OBD2 port — same cable and process as all other G-Series models
• Driving Experience Control with expandable mode options (Sport Plus and Comfort Plus activated via coding)

All 9 Hidden Features: G22/G23/G24

Every G22-family model supports the full set of 9 iDrive 7 hidden features. The $649 bundle activates all of them in a single 40–50 minute remote session.

• Video In Motion (VIM) — enables video playback on the iDrive screen while driving; ideal for passengers
• Auto Start-Stop Memory — remembers your start-stop preference across ignition cycles; if you turn it off, it stays off
• Reverse Mirror Dip — passenger door mirror tilts down automatically when reverse is selected, showing the kerb
• M Startup Animation — activates the M-branded instrument cluster startup sequence across all G22-family variants, including non-M440i trims
• Sport Plus and Comfort Plus Modes — adds extended driving mode options with corresponding gauge cluster themes
• Windows Close on Engine Off — all windows (and sunroof, if fitted) close automatically when you switch the ignition off
• Legal Disclaimer Screen Removal — eliminates the tap-to-dismiss safety notice on iDrive startup
• Boot Lid / Tailgate Key Disable — disables the foot-gesture or key-fob boot opener, preventing accidental activations
• Fold Mirrors on Lock — door mirrors fold automatically every time the car is locked; unfold on unlock

M440i xDrive — Special Notes

The M440i xDrive is the performance flagship of the standard G22 range (below the full M4). It features the B58 turbocharged inline-six engine, standard xDrive all-wheel drive, M Sport suspension, and an M Sport exhaust. From a coding perspective:

• All 9 features are available on the M440i xDrive, identical to lower-spec G22 variants
• The M startup animation is particularly impactful on the M440i — the M-branded instrument cluster sequence is a fitting complement to the M440i’s performance identity
• The M440i’s Driving Experience Control already includes Sport and Sport+ modes; coding adds Sport Plus as an enhanced overlay on top of these
