Via the My BMW App

Via Key Fob
On supported models (most G-Series with Comfort Access): press the lock button twice in quick succession. The hazard lights flash twice to confirm the engine has started.
Safety — Can Someone Drive the Car?
No. BMW’s remote start system has multiple safety locks:
- Transmission stays in Park — cannot be shifted without the key physically in the vehicle
- Doors remain locked
- Brake pedal must be pressed with the key inside before drive is available
- If any door opens without the key being detected, the engine shuts off immediately

Under Magnuson-Moss (US) and equivalent consumer protection laws in other countries, a dealer must prove the coding caused a specific fault to deny a warranty claim — which is not possible for a remote start activation.
