Why BMW Navigation Regions Exist
BMW programs the Map and Graphics Unit (MGU) with a regional license during factory production. This license controls:
- Which map database loads (North America, Europe, Middle East, etc.)
- Speed limit display units and values (mph vs km/h, US highway limits vs EU limits)
- POI (Points of Interest) database for restaurants, gas stations, charging points
- Language defaults and address input format
- Speed camera warning databases (EU/AU/ME only)
A European-spec BMW in the USA will show EU maps and European speed limits. A US-spec BMW in Europe will have zero EU road coverage. The fix is a full regional license transfer — not just a map file update.
US ↔ Europe Region Change: Most Common Scenarios
Scenario 1: European BMW Imported to the USA (EU → US)
Grey-market European BMWs are popular in the US — especially M-models and special editions not sold in North America. These arrive with EU maps and EU-format navigation. After our region change, your BMW will have:
- Full North America map coverage (USA, Canada, Mexico)

Scenario 2: US BMW Relocated to Europe (US → EU)

Frequently Asked Questions — US Navigation Region Change
Will a US → EU region change affect my warranty?
Navigation region change is a software operation only. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (US), a dealer must prove the software change caused a specific fault to deny a warranty claim — which is not possible for a navigation region change. In practice, BMW dealers perform region changes themselves as a paid service.
Can I switch back to US maps later?
Yes. Every region change is reversible. We can switch back to North America maps at any time for the same service fee.
Does it work with my existing map subscription?
Map update subscriptions are region-specific. After a region change, your new region’s free map update period begins fresh (typically 3 years of free updates on new iDrive 7 units).
My BMW was US-spec but I want EU maps — will the speedometer change to km/h?
Yes — we code both the navigation region AND the instrument cluster display units to km/h (or leave as mph if preferred). Both are changed in one session.
