BMW Digital Key: How It Works, Which Models Support It, and How to Activate
What Is BMW Digital Key?
BMW Digital Key lets you lock, unlock, and start your BMW using your iPhone or Samsung phone instead of a physical key fob. Your phone communicates with the car via NFC (tap to unlock) or UWB (walk up and it unlocks automatically).
How It Works
- NFC (tap) — hold your phone to the driver door handle to unlock, place it on the wireless charging tray to start
- UWB (passive) — car detects your phone in your pocket as you approach, unlocks automatically (iPhone 11+ only)
- Key sharing — send a digital key to family or friends via iMessage or Samsung account, with optional speed limits

My BMW Has the Hardware But Digital Key Does Not Work
Many 2020+ G-Series BMWs have the NFC antenna in the door handle from the factory, even if Digital Key was not part of the original order. The feature can be activated through remote coding — enabling the NFC communication module and registering the car for Digital Key in the BMW Connected app.
How to Activate
Digital Key activation is a remote coding service. The NFC module is enabled and configured to accept phone-based keys. After coding, set up Digital Key in the BMW app on your phone.
