BMW G05 Mirror Tap Power Stays Active After Locking: How to Fix OBD Always-On Power
Your Radar Detector or Dashcam Stays On After You Lock the Car
You installed a radar detector (Uniden R7, Valentine One, etc.) or dashcam using a mirror tap or OBD power adapter on your G05 X5. The device works great while driving, but when you lock the car and walk away, the device stays powered. You come back the next morning to a dead battery — or at least a noticeably lower charge.
This is a known issue on G-Series BMWs where the OBD-II port and certain accessory circuits remain powered for an extended period after the car is locked.
Why the OBD Port Stays Powered
On G-Series BMWs, the OBD-II port and several interior circuits remain active for up to 30-60 minutes after locking. This is by design — BMW keeps the bus awake for:
- Remote software updates (OTA)
- ConnectedDrive services
- Comfort Access monitoring
- Alarm system initialization
If your device draws more than a few milliamps, this extended wake time can drain the battery over days — especially if the car sits unused.
Solutions
1. Use a Switched Power Source Instead of Mirror Tap
The cleanest solution is to wire your radar detector or dashcam to a circuit that truly turns off with the ignition. The mirror tap on G05 connects to the interior light circuit, which stays powered. Better options:
- Fuse box tap on a switched circuit — find a fuse that only powers on with ignition
- Add-a-fuse with ignition-switched slot — use the fuse box diagram to identify switched vs always-on fuses
2. Hardwire Kit with Voltage Cutoff
Dashcam hardwire kits (like the Viofo HK4 or BlackVue Power Magic) include a voltage cutoff that disconnects the device when battery voltage drops below a threshold (typically 11.8V-12.0V). This allows parking mode recording while protecting the battery.
3. Code the Bus Sleep Timer (Advanced)
It is possible to reduce the post-lock bus wake time via coding. This makes the car enter sleep mode faster after locking, cutting power to the OBD port and accessory circuits sooner. However, this may affect OTA updates and some ConnectedDrive functions.
4. OBD Power Switch
The simplest hardware solution: an inline OBD power switch that physically disconnects your device when you park. Available for under $20 on Amazon.
G05-Specific Fuse Locations for Switched Power
| Fuse | Location | Type | Good For |
|---|---|---|---|
| F85 | Rear SAM | Switched (ignition) | Radar detector |
| F15 | Front SAM | Switched | Dashcam |
| OBD Pin 16 | Under dash | Always-on | Avoid for accessories |
