BMW Walk Away Lock Works But Mirrors Don't Fold: Why and How to Fix It
Walk Away Lock Is Working — But the Mirrors Stay Up
You enabled Walk Away Lock (the car locks automatically when you walk away with the key). It works — you hear the lock chirp, the car locks. But the mirrors do not fold in.
This is because Walk Away Lock and auto mirror fold on lock are two completely separate functions controlled by different parameters in the BDC (Body Domain Controller). Enabling one does not enable the other.
BMW auto mirror fold on lock is available via remote coding ($79) or as part of the Comfort Coding Package ($179) or via the Smart Comfort Module ($229 plug-and-play). M-TRI UPGRADE, WhatsApp +6421920905.
How BMW Lock Functions Are Structured
| Function | Module | Enabled By |
|---|---|---|
| Walk Away Lock | BDC + Comfort Access | iDrive setting (if available) or coding |
| Mirror fold on lock | BDC | Coding or hardware module |
| Horn chirp on lock | BDC | Coding |
| Windows close on lock | BDC | Coding |
Each of these lock-related behaviors is independently configured. Having Walk Away Lock does not automatically activate any of the others.
Why Mirror Fold Does Not Activate Automatically
BMW disables auto mirror fold by default in most markets. The logic is configured in the BDC module. Even on cars equipped with power-folding mirrors (which is most G-Series models), the "fold on lock" behavior requires explicit coding activation.
How to Enable Mirror Fold on Lock
Option 1: Remote Coding
A remote coding session modifies the BDC parameters to enable mirror fold on lock signal. On I-Level 22-xx and older, standard coding works. On I-Level 23-03+, NCD 2.0 secure coding is required.
Option 2: Smart Comfort Module (Plug-and-Play)
The Smart Comfort Module plugs into the car and sends the mirror fold signal via CAN bus on every lock event. It works on all I-Levels, is immune to software updates, and requires no coding.
Option 3: Comfort Coding Package
Get mirror fold + start-stop disable + window close + horn chirp + seat memory all in one session for $179.
